Pi Day Story Time
March 14th (3/14) is Pi Day, so for story time, we’re learning all about circles as well as everyone’s favorite circular dessert: pie. See below for my story time outline, as well as notes for the games and songs.
Welcome Song
Book #1
Circle Dogs, by Kevin Henkes and Dan Yaccarino
Songs
Sunny Sun
The gender neutral version of Mr. Sun.
What is This Shape?
Using this template, I give each child a shape card for a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Before each verse of the song, I ask them to hold up their corresponding shape.
Game
What Color is Your Circle?
Since I have about 15 circle carpet spots in different colors, I put them along the story time semi-circle and ask each child to pick a circle to sit on. I tell them to raise their hand if their circle is green, then we all clap for the raised hands. I repeat for each color. This is a great game for practicing colors and listening skills, as well as raising their hands.
Book #2
Pie is For Sharing, by Stephanie Parsley Ledyard and Jason Chin
Songs
Row Your Boat
Roll Your Pie
Pie Wishes
Whiteboard Rhyme
I don’t often use puppets for my story times, but in this case, I have a puppet helper. To prep, I cut a picture of a pie into four pieces, laminate each piece, and tape to my whiteboard. As I read the rhyme, my puppet helper gobbles up each piece. You can make a piece with felt pieces instead.
Craft Explanation
Paper Plate Pie Craft
Since this story time coincides with our local school system’s Spring Break (as well as our VERY busy tourist season), I chose a simple paper plate pie for the craft. Crayons + glue + paper = easy prep and happy kids.

Paper plates
Red paper cut or ripped into pieces
Brown paper cut into thin strips
